The Winery!!
One of the most significant wineries in McLaren Vale, d’Arenberg was established in 1912 when Joseph Osborn, a teetotaler and director of Thomas Hardy and Sons, sold his stable of prize winning horses to purchase the property that now houses the winery, cellar door and d’Arry’s Verandah Restaurant.

Joseph’s son Frank joined him on the land and they set about acquiring some more vineyards. Joseph Osborn died in 1921 leaving full control of the business to Frank.

In the early years grapes were sold to other wineries before the winery was built in 1927 shortly after Francis (universally known as d’Arry) Osborn was born.

Initially making fortified wines to export to England, the business prospered until World War II stifled demand. This coincided with Frank’s ill health which forced d’Arry to leave school in 1943 at age 16 to help his father run the business and work the land.

d’Arry took full control of the business in 1957 upon Frank’s death and in 1959 he launched his own wine label named in honour of his mother, Helena d'Arenberg, who died shortly after giving birth to him. d’Arry decided to put a red stripe on the label, inspired by happy memories of his school days at Prince Alfred College, where he wore the crimson-and-white striped school tie.

d’Arry’s son Chester joined the business in 1984 as Chief Winemaker and makes distinctive wines using traditional methods both in the vineyard and the winery.

The Wines!!

Stump Jump White $14.99

Riesling (46%) Sauvignon Blanc (34%) Marsanne (20%)
The complexity of the blend is reflected in the truly exotic nature of the aromas. We can detect everything from frangipani, citrus and white stone fruits through to more savoury notes of raw cashew and fresh cut radish. The palate displays a wonderful volume of fruit, almost creamy in texture were it not for the dart-like line of acidity that checks the roundness. From beginning to end there is a transition, from the more fruity like characters of peach and citrus into more savoury, nutty, nuanced flavours on the finish. A wonderfully satisfying white wine with plenty of fruit character and a
clean, crisp, dry finish.

Eden Valley Viognier $20.99
Sweet honeysuckle and jasmine fragrances set the scene for an exotic blend of grapefruit, lemongrass and stone fruit flavours. This alluring, silky white wine is rich, rewarding, and nothing short of delicious.

Stump Jump Red $14.99

Grenache (62%) Shiraz (20%) Mourvedre (18%)

The 2012 Stump Jump shows generous fruit characters mixed with savoury nuances, subtle oak and fine, gritty tannin. Grenache is the hero, with its lovely rhubarb, blueberry and white pepper notes. The Shiraz brings darker fruits, plums, fennel and earth along with a more robust texture and tannin structure which fill out the mid palate. Finally, the splash of Mourvedre adds exotic dried herb, lavender, iodine and cured meat notes along with a certain elegance and mineral tannin that draws the wine to a lingering finsh.
Balanced, pure with underlying complexities and
delicious.

"Menzies Cigar" Cabernet Sauvignon $25.99
This wine is plum red in colour and medium to full depth in hue. The bouquet shows bright cherry, chocolate and musk fruit aromas supported by savoury cedar oak. The palate is vibrant with blueberries and rhubarb balanced by choc-mint with the tannins having mouth-filling praline texture. The finish is long and lingering.
Enjoy with barbecued lamb loin chops.

"The Laughing Magpie" Shiraz $34.99
Dark brooding fruit is apparent on the nose with earth, spice and dried herbs. The palate is round and luscious with an attractive black olive and sage character persistent throughout the palate. This wine has fantastic fruit weight, with great supporting tannin and balanced acidity. It still looks very youthful and should easily cellar for the next ten years.
