"Borgo San Daniele is an 18 hectare estate run by Alessandra and Mauro Mauri that follows a biodynamic farming philosophy and is largely dedicated to indigenous grapes.  This is an intriguing set of wines that are all joined by a profound sense of elegance and power.  I found them all to be extremely impressive. The 2012 Isonzo del Friuli Friulano is a delicately floral and elegant white that would pair next to mildly spicy Asian Cuisine. It shows grace and charm with pretty aromas of crushed rose and summer peach.  Some 20% of the wine sees oak and there is indeed a distant note of roasted hazelnut at the back."

Our Thoughts on this wine.....

Wild flowers with hints of orange peel on the nose. Palate is soft, ripe fruit with good acidity and a delicate finish of sweet almonds. Pale straw color in the glass. Delicious with a wide range of foods from appetizers and soups through rice and pasta first courses to main dishes.

Their Mission Statement ….

A strictly limited number of labels which are the expression of a viticulture respectful of the environment and a personal interpretation of the native varieties of Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Making a small range of wines means making choices. It teaches you to select and to reflect. On the land inherited from our grandfather we have embraced the best practices of biodynamic viticulture, without shouting it to the skies. Selecting the best sites, we have planted new vineyards, matching the various varieties each to its own position, aspect and elevation. Exploiting to best effect the differing sub-soils, we have always left grass cover in the vineyards to check the vigour of the vines and at the same time to preserve the natural balance of the soils that receive them.

Environmental impact

The land is an inheritance and we have a duty to preserve it. In 1990, in order to be sure of limiting the environmental impact and to guarantee the health of the vines, we adopted, from the very beginning, high density planting. Green harvesting and crop thinning, long fermentation on the lees, malolactic and unfiltered bottling have been the key words, together with dedicated manual harvesting aimed at picking each variety at the moment of perfect ripeness, to preserve that touch of crunchy freshness which is the hallmark of our wines.

Making sustainable choices drives us on. We do not use chemical preparations in our vineyard, only copper sulphite and above all infusions of equisetum e dandelion, which give excellent results if applied at the right moment in the vegetative cycle. During vinification we use a small-scale solera system to recuperate a part of the yeasts. Those that are left will inoculate the new musts, so that their DNA is preserved over time. Because wine is also memory.
