Since the beginning of my exporting career I have long dreamt of having my own small "bodega", where I could make a few bottles of wine of the best quality possible. Briones, in the heart of the Rioja Alta,  gathered all the conditions  I was looking for: old steep vineyards of Tempranillo grapes, chalky soil and a climate showing a marked Atlantic influence. Declared a town of historic and artistic merit, Briones is where we decided to site our bodega.

Twenty years ago, we restored an old 19th Century house on the outskirts of the town. On the adjoining land we built facilities for

vinification, barrel and bottle ageing and planted a small experimental vineyard.

Now, as one of the smallest and youngest wineries in Spain —our first vintage was 1994— our wines are among the most prestigious in the country, and we are exporting them to over 30 markets. This encourages us to grow, not in quantity, but to constantly improve our style; how to get the best from each grape and each barrel. To continue to enjoy our wine-making.

The Wines!!

Lora is the eco project of the young winemaker Miguel Merino Navajas, who makes Rioja’s boutique wines ‘Miguel Merino’ along with his father. Miguel, a big supporter of Ecological Agriculture, began to work a vineyard and converted it into organic to create a small range of modern Organic Wines.

The result is Lora: fresh, fruity wines that convey all the sun, joy and excitement from Spain

LORA White

A blend of the Spanish grape Verdejo and the international Sauvignon Blanc. Beautiful pale white colour with green hints. Tropical fruits and floral aromas on the nose of this delicate, savoury organic white wine. Dry, smooth and elegant, with great balance and length.

Perfect to drink with Tapas, salads and vegetable dishes, all kinds of pasta, mild cheeses and exotic cuisine. It also goes great with fish, seafood, grilled meats or just a glass on its own.

LORA Red

A harmonic combination of Tempranillo and Syrah with a touch of Merlot. Bright ruby-coloured, this wine has an excellent nose of violets, black cherry and earth notes. Its ageing in oak barrels gives the wine spicy aromas such as vanilla, pepper and toasty notes. On the palate it is soft and silky, delicate and round, with great balance between fruit, oak and spiciness.

A perfect match to a wide range of food, such as grilled lamb and veal, a nice warming casserole, some good Spanish Tapas, all kinds of cheeses or just a glass on its own. A little secret? Try it with dark chocolate!

Miguel Merino Jovenes

Old vines do not live forever. In order to have access to such special vines in the future as we do today, we needed to start working on younger vineyards as well. In 2007 we bought the vineyard of El Rincon, in the South of Briones, planted in 1998. We have also planted some new vineyards which will become part of this wine until the vines are old enough to give us grapes for our Reservas.

Miguel Merino Reserva 2005

Balance and harmony are the key of a good Reserva wine. Nothing must be missing, but nothing should outstand: fruit, intensity, structure, persistence and personality must appear unisonous as a good orchestra. And that is what we aim in this wine made from vineyards planted in the 60’s.

Unnum

The vineyard as the Star. Tempranillo is the grape that best leads and keeps the peculiarities in each soil, and with this wine we try to bottle a place and a year. Everything that comes after the harvest (fermentation, oak, ageing) is designed to respect and maintain the extraordinary characteristics of Mendiguerra and La Loma, the vineyards of Unnum.
