Every weekend we have free tastings that give you a chance to explore the wide word of wines! Come in this weekend and visit with us! Each Friday we try to start your weekend off with a sampling of fine wines and beers that will allow you to relax into your "days off" with a positive note. Always a gathering of friends and neighbors and good conversation.

This week's tasting features three wines from one of our favorite wineries in Northern Italy's Alto-Adige region. The Kaltern estate is considered among the very best cooperative wineries in Europe. The winery sits in a breathtaking corner of the Dolomite mountain range, overlooking Caldaro Lake. Alto Adige is a unique pocket in the Northernmost part Italy, close to the borders of Germany and Austria, and the German influence is strong in the customs, language, food, and wine style. There are 400 tiny growers who are the members of this winery and some of the parcels of land are as small as 1/4 acre. The patchwork of vineyards form a remarkable design.

We have two brand new wines from Kaldaro on the tasting table on Friday:

Kaldaro "K" White Blend (Pinot Bianco/Chardonnay/Sauvignon Blanc)--deliciously crisp and refreshing, you'll find notes of pear, yellow apples and citrus in the aroma. Juicy fruit flavors and bright acidity make this the perfect, easy drinking,  warm weather wine (also great with lighter fare like pasta and fish).

Kaldaro "K" Red Blend (Schiava/Lagrein) --A blend of two indigenous grapes, this light bodied (some would almost call it a "heavy rose") is delightful, refreshing and perfect with a tiny chill. Schiava is *THE* red wine that is consumed by the locals in the Italian Alps, and it is easy to appreciate its charms. Flavors of dried strawberry and raspberry linger between sips. This is the *perfect* summertime red.

Kaldaro Pinot Nero
This is a pure expression of Pinot Nero. It is silky and smooth, with flavors of wild berry, cola, chopped mint and blue flower. The finish is fresh and bright-- perfect for the person who likes classic Pinot.

AND we're cracking open one of our favorite sparklers from one of our favorite Italian producers- La Cappuccina in Verona.
The Tessari family has been growing grapes at La Cappuccina, the site of an ancient chapel of Franciscan friars, for over a century. The vineyards, which surround the family villa, are locaed at Cosalunga, in the Soave DOC production area of Verona. Now the winery is in the capable hands of the Sisto, Pietro, and Elena, brothers and sister who run the winery and make the wines with careful attention to the winemaking traditions of their ancestors and of the region. La Cappuccina is a certified organic wine estate.

"FILOS" Sparkling Garganega (the grape the produces the area's famous Soave wine):
This is a great alternative to Italy's Proscco-- Tantalizing, green apple, pear, lemon zest, toasted nuts, creamy bubbles. You'd be hard pressed to find another sparkling wine of this quality and charm for the price!
