Elizabeth Spencer Philosophy

Elizabeth Pressler and Spencer Graham have developed a very deserved reputation for fine wine at agreeable prices. Having roots in Northern Virginia, they have always been a favorite of ours!

Style

Our belief is that wine should be delicious and representative of its appellation of origin.

We make wines to drink — inviting wines that we and our friends (and by extension, our customers) truly enjoy.

The model for all of our wines is intensity without excess weight, purity, persistence and length.

Vineyards

We source fruit from a handful of dedicated growers and a dozen vineyard blocks.

Our growers provide us with continuity of high quality fruit, and we pay them fairly and reliably, in vintages of scarcity and excess.

In an era of corporate grape contracts, our long-term agreements consist simply of mutual high regard and a handshake. We make Cabernet Sauvignon from select vineyards in the Napa Valley. Our Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah come from the Sonoma Coast appellation. We  produced very small quantities of Napa Valley Chardonnay, Mendocino Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Riesling and Sonoma Coast Rosé of Pinot Noir.

The Elizabeth Spencer Wines!

Sauvignon Blanc

Hay and quince and a touch of Sugar Snap pea on the nose. These fresh qualities are countered by delicate honeysuckle and apple, with a crisp finish of citrus fruit and a smidgen of cut grass. A fresh, crisp Sauvignon Blanc with a vibrant intensity that is well-balanced with good acidity and a lively, refreshing finish.

Chardonnay

Pale straw yellow. Delivers delicate aromatic complexity of ripe fruits such as green apple, pear blossom and apricot, with a dusting of linden flower. The light floral aromas are well matched in the mouth; expect a finely textured wine with ample pear fruit dominating the center, and hints of nectarine and lemon lingering in the finish. This Chardon- nay is lean, deliciously fruit forward, and very food friendly. We enjoy it as an aperitif or serve it with a wide variety of foods from popcorn to fresh grilled fish and chicken.

Pinot Noir

Dark ruby-red in color. Seductive, delicate aromas of ripe black cherry, citrus fruits and sweet orange oil which is quite typical for wines from this vineyard. A plump entry of mouth filling dark red fruits including damson plum mingle with hints of spice and dates. Though not as earthy as some vintages we have produced, this wine has hints of forest aromas, and finishes with full and concentrated robust red fruit flavors. This vintage of our Pinot Noir has ample tannins which allows the wine to pair well with every- thing from cheese to game birds and even lamb. The wine has great structure and plenty of backbone. It is delicious and approachable upon release and also has all the stuffing to make it quite age-worthy.

Grenache

Bright garnet red in color. The enticing aromas are fresh and intense black cherry along with notes of bergamot and peppercorn. The wine is supple and round on entry with the typical Grenache varietal characteristics of spice and ripe red currant apparent on the palate. This wine is firm, with core flavors of ripe black plum, kirsch, olive blossom and with hints of spice and melon. A minerality cuts through the finish, with lively red fruit flavors and with a touch of nectarine through to a clean and persistent finish.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Dark, brick red, medium-bodied. This wine has very bright aromatics with dark ripe fruit overlaid by floral notes of iris and candied citrus peel. Violet carries over into the entry and is met with hints of wild strawberry, and cassis. A lush, fruity core of ripe blackberry, juicy red and black currant is interwoven with black currant leaf, mocha and a savory hint of black pepper. Soft tannins and bright berries linger with notes of clove, drawing into a clean, round finish, with a touch of vanilla bean and mocha. There’s a refreshing bright- ness to the fruit from the beginning all the way through to the lingering, velvety finish. A classic example of intensity tempered by elegance and finesse.
