What’s in a Name?

Founded in 1995 by winemaker Scott Shull, Raptor Ridge Winery gets its name from the many families of raptors—red-tailed hawks, kestrels, sharp-shinned hawks and owls—that share the winery’s 27-acre estate.

The estate vineyard is named “Tuscowallame,” the indigenous word for “place where the owls dwell.” It’s a fitting name, not only for the raptors that make the vineyard their home, but for those that are released here following rehabilitative treatment by local raptor rescue foundations.

The relationship between the winery and the raptors is a symbiotic one. As the winery provides a haven for these beautiful creatures, the raptors in turn serve as protectors of the vineyard, aiding the winegrower in the battle against tunneling varmints and migratory birds that damage the vines and eat the ripe grapes at harvest.

The Wines!!

Pinot Gris 2012

This vintage resulted in another superstar Pinot Gris. Star bright and straw yellow in color, this wine sparkles in your glass. On the nose, a constellation of aromas swirl in and out of the bowl. Red delicious apple, Bosc pear, tangerine, lemon peel, and even a slight hit of banana all fight for the stage. On the palate, this lean wine embraces a wide spectrum of fruits, all enveloped in a stunning, racy acidity with zesty minerality that is sure to please both new and old world lovers alike.

Pinot Noir Willamette 2012

This beautiful expression of our Estate vineyard Pinot noir is a stunner on all fronts! In the glass, this wine is vibrant garnet with fantastic clarity. The nose greets you with red cranberry, red cherry, and crushed raspberry, with soft meaty notes of seasoned leather and ripe savory notes. On the palate, one is greeted by generous red fruits like cherry pie and raspberry leaf, wrapped up in a firm structure of tannin and crisp acidity. This wine will age well in your cellar, or enjoy now with rich buttery northwest salmon.

Pinot Noir Reserve 2011

This wine delivers some of the classic characteristics of this subtle, silky vintage. On the nose, red fruit like red raspberry, cherry, and strawberry dominate with warm brown spice undertones. The palate, though a bit tightly wound, supports these red fruits, with echoes of the brown spices and even a hint of mint to finish. With decanting, this wine will open up, revealing the beauty she will become with more time in the cellar.

Pinot Noir Shea Vineyards 2012

Clear, bright garnet in color, the 2012 Shea aromatics include black cherry, crushed plum and that cherry cola note frequently found in Oregon Pinot. The palate is full and rich with fantastic structure. Notice the black tea notes and cedar bark? Wrapped up with a little red raspberry juice, this classic wine has fantastic depth through its very long finish. This vintage is enjoyable now alongside a variety of meals. One might consider pairings such as duck breast with a cherry coulis, or even slow cooked beef short ribs. This wine will only get better with age, enjoyable through the next decade.
