The Wines!

NV Brut Rosé Metodo Classico, Scacciadiavoli            Umbria

Founded in 1884, Cantina Scacciadiavoli (literally  “cast out the devils”) takes its name from a 19th century exorcist who lived in the small village bordering the vineyard. He was known to use the wines while performing his exorcist ritual of ridding poor souls of demons.  Scacciadiavoli is the resulting dream of the Prince of Piombino, Ugo Boncompagni-Ludovisi. In 1884, the estate was built as a complex and modern winery, utilizing gravity to move the grape, juice and wine without pumping. Today, the Pambuffetti family owns Scacciadiavoli.  The estate is made up of 130 hectares, 35 of which make up the vineyards with an annual production of approximately 250,000 bottles. The vines cover a hill in the heart of the Montefalco denomination.  The Rosé is made from 100% Sagrantino grapes, hand picked and gently pressed within six hours. A slow, temperature controlled first fermentation preserves the primary aromas and flavors, followed by a second fermentation in the bottle of at least 18 months according to t\e “Metodo Classico.”

2013 Grecchetto dell’Umbria DOC, Scacciadiavoli    Umbria

The principal white grape grown at Scacciadiavoli is Grecchetto, suspected of having Greek origins and under the right conditions, capable of producing full-flavored and mouth-coating white wines.

Shellfish, white fish; also poultry and veal dishes; most light pastas and soups.

2010 Montefalco Rosso, DOC Scacciadiavoli    Umbria

The young wine of the Scacciadiavoli estate, in this case comprised of 15% Sagrantino, 60% Sangiovese and 25% Merlot.  Age 12 months in second and third passage French oak barrels of varying sizes, then in bottle for 6 months.  Can Marketed after 18 months.  Fresh on the nose, with notes of morello cherry: on the palate, it has dark fruit and spice, with a fine mouthfeel and a hint of soft tannins.

Excellent with pastas, grilled vegetables and meats and summer salads.

2010 Chianti Colli Fiorentini Riserva DOCG , Castello di Poppiano

    Toscana

The largest part of the Poppiano estate is situated in the Chianti Colli Fiorentini zone of the Chianti (the “Florentine Hills”).  The Riserva Chianti Colli Fiorentini 2010 DOCG is stunning: made with Sangiovese and Canaiolo, with 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, it has a typical violet-cherry bouquet, with ripe cherry on the palate and hints of leather and tobacco.  It is weighty, a wine for hearty foods, and the texture is smooth and silky.

Not your everyday Chianti, this bottle is best with roasted or grilled meats.  Also with mushrooms!

2007 Montefalco Sagrantino, DOCG Scacciadiavoli    Umbria

This is the premier wine of the estate, by law comprised of 100% Sagrantino.  Aged 24 months in French oak barrels of varying sizes, then in bottle for 24 months more.  May be marketed after 4 years.  Strong and powerful on the nose, with notes of morello cherry: on the palate, it has dark fruit and spice, with a fine mouthfeel and prominent but softening tannins.  Just released recently, this needs aeration before serving.

Roasts and grilled foods.
