S TEININGER

Gruner Veltliner

2013

KAMPTAL, AUSTRIA

"Lifted, pear-scented freshness dominates the nose while the palate is soft but has a pleasing and linear citrus focus. This is poised wine that offers sophisticated refreshment and will age very nicely for 3-5 years. "

The Winemaker's Thoughts...

This is a classical representative of Austrian Grüner Veltiner with inviting yellow fruits, ripe apples, fine herbal spice. It is juicy and elegant, full of finesse and with a well-integrated harmonic acidity. The vines of this Grüner Veltliner are planted in prime vineyards around Langenlois and the soil in these vineyards is mainly deep loess (very fine sandy soil with excellent drainage) which provides perfect conditions for the Grüner Veltliner. The must was fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks. After the fermentation the wine ages in the tank until it is bottled. This wine is a perfect example for a Grüner Veltliner from the Kamptal, one of the best regions in Austria for this grape.

Ideal food companion to:Nearly all appetizers and starters, particularly lightly sauteed items as well as entrees such as, AsparagusMeat and Poultry.

Our Thoughts ....

This pours very lushly into the glass and has a golden color with a brassy tinge. The aromas of ripe white and yellow tropical fruit nearly leap from your glass. As you savor the aroma, you pick up hints of spice and lemony citrus. The first sip is very soft and lush on the midpalate and that translates to a crisp finish with the spice from the nose and a hint of white pepper asserting its presence. The finish is nicely balanced with all the flavors well-integrated. It is a moderate to long lasting on the palate. You find yourself amazed that the wine continues to deliver additional complexity and you will be trying to decide which food will suit it best. My vote - a nice, thin, tender veal medallion sauteed in a bit of clarified butter with finely chopped parsley or watercress and a squeeze of lemon and a dash of the Gruner!!

PS for the vegetarians in the crowd, substitute a portobello mushroom for the veal and use olive or pumpkin seed oil -DEELISH!! .

The Steininger Family Philosophy.....

"...Winemaking is a life attitude and a fascinating task. As an old winegrowing family our ancestors taught us that the wine becomes simply better, if one cares for each individual vine personally and with passion. That is what we want to pass on to our youth in today's fast paced world.

Our Thoughts on this winemaker and his wines....

Karl Steininger's Winery and Vineyards are always one of the highlights of our trips to Austria. Not only does he make outstanding still wines, but he has excelled at delivering Sparkling Sekts (Austrian for "champagne") that are truly fantastic values. The Kamptal Gruner is the embodiment of Karl's belief that you must make an excellent still wine before you can make an excellent sparkling. We spent an afternoon walking the vineyards and enjoying the wines along the way - yes, I know, its very difficult, but someone has to do it and Kate is more than anxious to volunteer!

While she is relaxing in an easy chair, Klaus and I were trapped in a meeting room , forced to sample over 190 red wines that were brought before us in a seemingly unending line - oh, the horrors! (Klaus and I are in the second row at the bottom right hand side of the picture - you may not be able to pick up the cuffs that kept us from leaving :->

The Steininger Vineyards……

This is a family-run winery. Steininger is situated in the wine growing village of Langenlois in the Kamptal Valley. They cultivate 35 hectares (about 75 acres). Lower Austria is well-known for Grüner Veltliner (the most widely planted white wine grape in the country) and this is also the strength of the winery. Grüner Veltliner represents over 50% of our production and can be found in different styles, from a light summer wine to powerful and voluminous full bodied wines as well as dessert wines.

The Steininger winery is also well known for their delicious sparkling wines which are produced according to the traditional bottle fermenting method (Methode Champagnoise). Excellent base wines and vigilant second fermentation are the keys to obtaining great sparkling wines. All of the single vintage sparkling wines.... the Grüner Veltliner, the Riesling, the Sauvignon Blanc or the Zweigelt, incorporate their own personality.

As important as all of these factors are in finding a consistently excellent wine, just as important is the character of the individuals that are producing the wines. In this regard Karl, Birgitta, Ava and Lisa (Anna now spends her time with her husband's winery) are each remarkable people that Rande, Kate, Dave and I are proud to call friends. You will always be able to trust with this label that you have the highest quality possible for the price you pay.
