“GHIACCIO FORTE”

Super Tuscan  Morellino di Scansano 2011

A blend of Sangiovese, Alicante, Syrah and Petit Verdot

90 Points Wine Spectator!

“The 2011 Morellino di Scansano Ghiacchio Forte shows modern tones of black fruit, sweet cherry, leather and mild tobacco. The texture is smooth and supple and the wine puts up no resistance as it slides beautifully over the palate. There’s a bright blast of sweet baking spice on the close. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2020”.

“Here’s another project headed by hipster winemaker Filippo Chia of Castello Romitorio. The Chia family bought property in Scansano in the late 1990s and named their wine estate “Ghiacchio Forte” after an ancient Etruscan settlement once located here. One day while working the land, a tractor fell into an opening in the ground. It turned out to be an abandoned tomb. The Chia family found an ancient statue inside that is depicted on the label you see today.”

Our Thoughts......

Deep ruby red, it opens with a sweet bouquet of ripe berries, such as wild strawberries and raspberries, enriched with tobacco, earth and quinine cordial notes. It has a powerful taste defined by a promising,

The Morellino di Scansano “Ghiaccio Forte” is the estate’s crown jewel, it is produced only in exceptional vintages. The Ghiaccio Forte is a true testament to the maximum potential of the region. In 2011 it was named by the Italian Sommelier Association as “The best Morellino ever tasted by the panel”, also receiving the highest rating of 5 stars.

About Morellino di Scansano....

Situated on a hilltop in the southernmost section of Morellino di Scansano, the estate of Ghiaccio Forte bears a heritage formidable both in viniculture and in the historical patrimony of the region. Ghiaccio Forte inherits a winemaking tradition that has been the soul of this land for over two millennia.  It is named after the ancient Etruscan settlement whose center lay only a few kilometeres from what is now the estate’s cellars. The property is a total of 60 hectares of which 25 hectares are planted with vineyards, which are cared for using sustainable agricultural practices.  The winery produces two Morellino di Scansano’s; Vigna del Passero which is a youthful and approachable wine, and the venerable Ghiaccio Forte which is the maximum expression of this land and serves as a testament to the structure and age-worthiness of wines from this region.
