While Faust is outstanding in its own right, for Agustin Huneeus (owner/winemaker) it just misses the mark to be worthy of the ultra-premium label, Quintessa, which fetches $150 - $180 per bottle.

Our Thoughts……..

Bright, smooth, and rich ruby color with captivating aromas of black currant, red cherry, and spice are lifted out of the glass. The wine is inviting with a supple mouth-feel and notes of cassis, dark chocolate and ripe berries. The layers of complexity continue to develop throughout a silky finish. The 2011 is ready to drink now, but will continue to age gracefully and develop over five to six years.

A Bit about Faust......
Quintessa and Faust was created by Chilean couple Agustin and Valeria Huneeus in 1990. Agustin had been involved in the creation and early success of Concha y Toro, but left the country in 1971 when Marxist Salvador Allende became president. “We were going to go Communist and I'm an entrepreneur. I'm not political but it was not a propitious place for me to be.”

Agustin Huneeus  has spent his entire career in the wine industry with connections to various wine growing regions that span the globe. In Napa he is most well-known for opening the ultra-premium winery Quintessa and in fact Faust wine is made at Quintessa.. The name of this winery is based on an old German legend. Faust is a tribute to this old legend about Dr. Faust who was described in the German poet Goethes’ work. In the story, Dr. Faust was tempted by the Devil to exchange his soul in return for youth, energy and passion. The comparison can be made to Agustin’s renewed passion for making wine in a totally different manner than all his other endeavors. Throughout his wine career, and it has been a long one, Agustin has always produced wines with the intent to showcase great vineyards – in other words directly reflect the individual terroir of the specific vineyard’s location. However this is not the case with Faust – the premise behind this wine is to ultimately showcase Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa.
