The Wines!!

Dibon Cava Reserve, Brut NV $11.99

A Best Buy from the Wine Enthusiast: “ …A complete, and well-made Cava . The nose offers regal yeast and richness, while the palate has complexity to prop up apple, citrus and grapefruit flavors. Solid from front to back, with health and freshness."

This traditional blend of Xarel-lo, Parellada and Macabeo is inexpensive but far from cheap. Full of toasty, nutty, qualities with notes of cinnamon and corn meal this is very complex aromatically. Add some notes of brioche and fresh sourdough on the palate and a streak of chalk to the abundant baked apple quality and this is something special for the price. The vineyard is 100% Organic (as of  2009), and consists of 75 hectares of trellised vines 1000 feet above the Mediterranean Sea.

Bodegas La Cana Albarino, Rias Baixas $16.99

2013 Albarino Bodegas La Cana is fermented in stainless steel (80%) and large format barrels (20%) with aging on lees. On the nose, mineral notes, lemon peel, spices confectionery, and floral announce this round and tasty white soft texture. With excellent volume and length, and an excellent price / quality ratio, you can enjoy for 3-4 years.

(2012 Vintage) 91 points Josh Raynolds (International Wine Cellar): "(half aged in stainless steel and half in large French oak): Light, bright yellow. High-pitched aromas of lime zest, lemongrass and jasmine, with a chalky topnote. Dry and tightly wound, offering energetic citrus and orchard fruit flavors that expand and deepen with air. Shows excellent energy on the finish, leaving behind lime and pear skin notes. Very grown-up in style, with no excess fat; it's an amazing value to boot.

Tres Picos Garnacha $16.99

Very intense cherry red color with tones of purple. Presents in the nose a great concentration of aromas of ripe red fruit with floral nuances. In the mouth it is a well structured rich wine that evokes tastes of blackberry, plum and tones of leather and vanilla, with a soft and silky tannin.

"The terrific 2012 Tres Picos is one of the finest inexpensive, Grenache-based wines made in the world. This full-bodied beauty boasts a deep ruby color as well as loads of strawberry and black cherry fruit, hints of lavender and crushed rocks, sweet tannin, and a broad, savory mouthfeel." RP92 The Wine Advocate

Vina Alberdi Rioja Riserva, 2007 $22.99

Bright and lively deep cherry red with a pinkish rim. Intense on the nose, with aromas of ripe red berries (strawberries and blackberries) and roasted coffee and caramel balsamic notes. Good structured and well-balanced on the palate, with sweet tannins that led to a fresh and lingering finish. Aftertaste that recalls sweet spiced notes, candied fruit, minted chocolate, roasted coffee and caramel.

Vina Alberdi is extraordinarily versatile for food pairing. It ideally complements snacks and appetizers, as well as rice dishes, pasta and casserole recipes. It also pairs well with barbecues and delicate grilled meat and fish. 91pts The Wine Advocate RP

Alvear Pedro Ximenez, Solera 1927 $32.99

The vineyards, located at an elevation of 1,050 feet, are comprised of the famous chalky soil called Albariza and the 40-year-old vines produce extremely low yields. The grapes were hand-harvested at the peak of maturity and dried on mats in the sun. This is one of the oldest wines in the cellar since the Solera was started at the beginning of the last century.

96 Points The Wine Advocate "The impressive 1927 Pedro Ximenez Solera, from a Solera begun nearly 80 years ago, boasts a dark amber color as well as an extraordinary nose of creme brulee, liquefied nuts, marmalade, and maple syrup. Huge and viscous, yet neither cloyingly sweet nor heavy, it is a profound effort priced unbelievably low."

Alvear is technically not a sherry as  it is near but not in Jerez ---- Montilla Moriles, Andalucía, is sherry's secret cousin East of Andalucía's traditional sherry vineyards around Jerez is Montilla, where the finos and amontillados are possibly better than the better-known cousins, and hardly any tourists visit
