Moraitis Winery, Paros?

Like Santorini, this far less well known island is home to Aegean beauty and unique, one of a kind wines.  And like Santorini the wine growers fight off tourism to protect their traditional vineyards. Its roots run deep, to the Cycladic Civilisation era (3200 – 2000 B.C.). The main white variety is Monemvasia.

According to Mrs Stavroula Kourakou, Dr Chemist - Oenologist, Paros is the arc which saved the variety Monemvasia (Malvasia) from the Venetian rule era until today.

Other varieties cultivated are Black Aidani, Vaftra, Karabraimi, White Aidani, Asyrtiko, Savatiano, Malagouzia, Roditis, Maloukato and Potamisi.

The tourist development has reduced the vine yard to 600 hectares. These are lands scattered all around the island in steps, if necessary, and enclosed in dry wall. The ground is poor, dry with sandy - sandy/ argillaceous texture. The winter is mild with little rain, while the summer is cool due to the strong north-eastern winds.
The yield does not exceed 8000 kg/ hectare.

Moraitis "Silogi" White 2014

From the private organic vines of Moraitis Winery, made of the varieties Malagousia and Assyrtiko. The vineyard is integrated with  biological viticulture since 1997 and controlled by the certification organization DIO.  Bright pale yellow colour with vivid green reflections.  Fresh flower and grapefruit aromas. Shows intense minerality and refreshing acidity alongside its citrus, tropical fruit and floral notes.
Great with seafood(especially oysters,) pasta and salads.

Moraitis "Silogi NV Red
From the private organic vines of Moraitis Winery, made of the varieties Aidani Mavro and Cabernet Sauvignon aged 18 months in Oak.

Crimson color with ruby highlights.   Complex bouquet of ripe red fruit, dried cherries and cinnamon. Structured on the palate with a rich, full body, velvety tannins and a long finish.
Accompanies poultry, ripened or roasted meat and soft cheese.

Sant'Or Saint George Red- Vegan

From a tiny dedicated organic winery in Peloponnese, this little Saint George is full of flavor and character with soft and spicy plum fruit, pipe tobacco and cedar.

"The main thing to create good wine is the quality of the grapes.  Our vineyards have low yields, they are situated in high altitude clay/schist soils."

Nico Lazaridis "Black Sheep" Red 2013

Protected Geographical Indication Mount Pangeon

Syrah/Merlot

The Black Sheep red is produced at the Mackedon Winery at Platanotopos, Kavala, a small distance from the vineyards.

A stylish, modern wine with vivid ruby red color with purple highlights. Intense aromas of cherry, violet and plum, wrapped up in a velvety texture with a pleasant finish. The high quality grapes combined with different vinification techniques offer a more youthful and fruity approach to the typical character of the variety. Served at 15-18oC, it is a worthy accompaniment to red meat, braised meat casserole, refreshing green salads and pungent cheeses.

Vigneron Tavel Sol Acantalys Rosé 2014
Do not let the color fool you.  This is a lovely dry French rosé  from the famous Tavel appellation in the Southern Rhone. Amazing nose full of fresh red berries.   Nice, zesty acidity and fruit on the palate.   A wonderful wine for a warm sunny day.  Pop this one in the picnic basket to pair with cheese, pate and pasta salads.  Also delicious all by itself.
