Arrocal Selección 2010 $42.99
There’s a vineyard down near the village – my father’s vineyard. He looks after it and lovingly tends the vines all year round. It’s curious to see the way his eyes shine when we work with his grapes at harvest time; the way he asks how the wine is going to come out. Here it is! It’s been sleeping for 15 months in French oak barrels. Now it’s all yours. I hope your eyes are shining too.

VARIETY: 100% TEMPRANILLO

TASTING: Opaque ruby colour. A complex bouquet shows us black fruit, soy sauce and crystallised violets, supported by soft minerals, with deep blackberry and bramble flavours, a soft texture and impressive background elevation. Its weight increases when it breathes, but it remains supple, with a spicy nature remaining impressive in the finish. This is enough of an attraction for drinking it now, but it also builds with age.

Arrocal Ángel 2011 (By Pre-order Only) $59.99
Produced from the 70-year-old “El Portillo” patch from vines planted by the owner’s grandfather, Angel. The grapes were grown organically and only 2,000kg/hectare are obtained. The grapes are harvested by hand and the wine is made with native yeast in a 3,000-litre stainless steel tank, spending 20-25 days with the skins before pressing. The wine resulting from the pressings is discarded. There is then a 20-month ageing period in new French oak barrels.

VARIETY: 100% TEMPRANILLO
VINEYARDS: “El Portillo” patch in the municipality of Gumiel de Mercado. Limited production.
HARVEST: Carried out manually in 16kg boxes in the first week of October, carried to the winery in 3,000kg trailers.
MACERATION: 20 days at a temperature controlled using water showers.
AGEING: 20 months in French oak barrels.
BARREL TOASTING: Medium and medium plus toasting.
BOTTLING: 1 bottling a year.
HARVEST SIZE: 3,000-5,000 bottles a year.
WINEMAKING DIRECTOR: Isaac Fernández Montaña.

TASTING: Opaque ruby colour. Perfume of exotic blackberry, plum jam, cola, oak, spice and incense aromas. Fruity aromas. Exuberant, spicy, dark-layered palate raised and shared by the gentle acidity. Hangs on with real authority, leaving smoky and spicy notes. From now on, the wine is velvety, ready for drinking now and perfect for drinking with a piece of grilled or roast lamb in autumn.
