 Steininger

Grüner Veltliner

Kamptal, D.A.C .

Langenlois, Austria

2013

What a delicious alternative to Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio!

Weight enough to complement any meal - even Avocados, Asparagus and Artichokes!!

Notoriously difficult to pair with wine!

Beautiful tropical aromas and just a pinch of white pepper on the finish to awaken your taste buds and make you want the next sip.

This excellent Gruner Veltliner has been a favorite of ours for years, this wine over-delivers in quality and value! A case of this wine is a must for summer and fall.

And to make this even more appealing, the Steininger Family is one of the nicest group of people that I know.

92 POINTS  Wine Enthusiast
“Lifted, pear-scented freshness dominates the nose while the palate is soft but has a pleasing and linear citrus focus. This is poised and offers sophisticated refreshment.”
Anne Krebiehl, MW

Tasting Notes
This is an excellent example of a typical Austrian Grüner Veltliner. A dry (yes dry…don’t let the bottle fool you!)  and fresh white wine with influences of green apples, grapefruit and lemon showing off trademarks of flinty mineral, citrus and tropical fruit. The spice of white pepper and ripe acidity underlines all this.  A perfect every day white wine.

A Bit about Austrian Wines.......

Historical evidence leads us to believe that the original Austrian vineyards were planted in Traisental over 4000 years ago. Bordering Hungary, Germany and Italy, Austria has a cool continental climate which is heavily influenced by the neighboring Alps. Austrian wines have enjoyed recent international success thanks to the dry white wines made from the indigenous grape variety Grüner Veltliner. This spicy white grape accounts for more than a third of Austria’s total acreage under vine.

Kamptal gets its name from the river Kamp, that flows directly through it, and is also home to Austria's largest wine-producing town, Langenlois. Kamptal boasts a variety of terroir, ranging from loess to gravel to crystalline sites and red feldspathic sandstones and conglomerates, as on the highly regarded Heiligenstein. The name derives from the blazing sunshine that cause a hot and dry micro climate. The geological development of the rock is rather special, is between 320 and 250 million year old, formed desert-like conditions as a flash flood deposit and includes volcanic particles

Along the steep terraces of the south-facing slopes, that in places are so steep that no layers of loess can form a hold, Riesling vines are planted, producing powerful, mineral wines with exceptional aging potential. Moving southwards towards the Danube, there is a change in the soil structure to wider loess and loam terraces as offering the perfect conditions for traditional, but also full-bodied Grüner Veltiner, as well as the red and white Pinot varieties and Zweigelt. These wines are marketed under the designation of "Niederösterreich".

Kamptal has the effects of the hot, Pannonian plain heat from the east and the cooler Waldviertel region towards the north west. The fine, delicate aromatics and retained naturally vibrant acidity in the grapes, is due to this unique combination of warm days and cool nights.

A must-visit attraction for wine enthusiasts is the "Loisium" wine experience, with its futuristic visitors' centre overground, leading to an underground labyrinth of several hundred year old wine cellars with a light and sound wine experience. Other important wine-growing towns within a short distance of Langenlois are Schiltern, Gobelsburg, Haindorf and Zöbing, and the important wine commune of Straß im Straßertale. Smaller wine villages include Etsdorf, Hadersdorf, Kammern, Lengenfeld and Schönberg.
