"A brilliant blend of 85% Petite Sirah and 15% Petit Verdot, the red Petite Petit (42,000 cases) sports an adorable label showing two scowling elephants. From winemaker Adam Mettler, this opaque purple-colored 2012 exhibits gorgeous aromas of camphor, blueberries, blackberries, licorice, toast and subtle background smoke. With amazing intensity, it is hard to believe a 42,000-case cuvée could be this good, this complex, this tasty and civilized, and still sell at a remarkable price. Enjoy it over the next 5+ years.

A candidate for the best value winery in the United States, the Michael & David Winery is incredibly proficient at turning out full-flavored wines at bargain basement prices. Shrewd consumers take note."

Our Thoughts on this wine.....

This soft, opaque purple-colored wine exhibits impressive density as well as lots of blueberry and blackberry fruit intermixed with graphite, licorice and a hint of tar.

This is a "fly-below-the-radar" wine that pleases and pleases some more. Be wary though! It will turn your teeth blue if you have too much!!

About Michael David  Winery ……

The Phillips family has been farming since our Great Great Grandfather Andrew Harshner and his wife Lucille homesteaded 160 acres near the town of Lodi, following the Civil War in the 1860’s. The region’s natural affinity for grape growing quickly became evident, and by the turn of the century (the last one), twenty-five percent of California’s grape acreage was in Lodi. A generation later saw the demise of many pioneering wineries in the state.

Originally devoted to vegetables, the Phillips’ farms evolved to include many different fruits, including fifteen different wine varietals that were shipped throughout the country during Prohibition with instructions on “how not to have the grapes turn into wine”. Thereby, Prohibition was good for Lodi growers, with families everywhere keeping up the tradition of wine with meals by ordering these grapes and “juice” to be bottled at home.

.

About the Vineyards.....

These days, Michael and David Phillips represent the fifth generation of growers in Lodi, and things are changing. With 650 acres of premium wine grapes, there is plenty of room for experimentation and innovation. The vineyards are irrigated by the Mokelumne River, which carries crystal-clear water from the Sierra Nevada Mountains, depositing minerals into the rich soils upon which the grapes thrive. Though not certified organic, Michael~David Winery strives to use all natural methods including integrated pest management, beneficial insects for pest control, trellising, leaf pulling and natural mined sulfur for mildew control.

Michael is a 5th generation Lodi grape grower.  While growing up, he farmed with his father, driving tractor at age 10 and helping with grape harvesting.  After graduating from U.C. Davis, Michael began planting vineyards of varietals not typical of Lodi and began winemaking through the production of small lots as a home winemaker.  In 1984, after nearly a decade of refining his techniques of winemaking, Michael, with the support of his father, decided to establish a bonded winery.  With a small market storefront available for marketing the wine, the first vintage of Carignane, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay were produced from the family’s grapes.  After giving up the hands on winemaking, Michael can frequently be found in the winery conferring with the winemakers and working on the blending of the wines.  Michael’s goal is to show the world of wine drinkers that wines made from Lodi grapes can compete against wines from anywhere in the world.  In order to promote the quality of Lodi wines, and his own wines in particular, Michael spends more than half of his time traveling in the United States.  His wife Kristy often travels with him promoting the wines at trade shows, wine tastings and wine dinners.  Two of his three children are an integral part of the family business while his third child is a research scientist.

David grew up in the vineyards of the family Homestead, driving tractor and selling the Farms produce at farmers markets and the local family fruit stands.  After graduating from Lodi high in 1981, he attended U.C Davis majoring in International Agriculture Development.  After graduating from Davis, David worked for an International cork company, importing corks from Portugal and marketing them to wineries throughout Northern California.  In 1988 He met his future wife Corene and they spent the following year backpacking around the world, visiting numerous wine regions from Australia to Europe.  David returned to Lodi in 1989 to work full time with his brother Michael.  Together they started to increase production of their wines.  David oversaw the early distribution and growth of the wines, starting with 1 distributor in Chicago in 1999 and growing to all 50 states by 2004.  David travels often promoting the wines around the country, and now numerous export markets including Sweden, China, and Canada.
