?Esporão Winery is synonymous with quality wine in the Alentejo wine region of Portugal's sunny south.  From their historic estate vineyards in the Reguengos de Monsaraz sub-region, they craft an impressive range from table wines through to boutique, cellar worthy gems.  The estate works with a blend of native and international varieties(over 180 varieties are planted at Esporão with 37 accounting for the bulk of wine production.)  They are still a family owned winery, and received the ‘Sustainability of the Year’ award in The Drinks Business Green Awards 2013.  The Esporão Verdelho 2013 was awarded Wine of the year at Concurso dos Vinhos, Portugal's most prestigious wine competition, the first time this award was presented to a white wine!  In 2008 the company purchased the historic Quinta dos Murcas in the Douro Valley.

Esporão Verdelho 2013 $16.99
Verdelho is not Verdejo, though it's grassy aromas, citrus and high acids may remind to this or Sauvignon blanc.  It is a grape used in Madeira and genetically similar to Spain's Godello.  Searching for a white variety that could stand up to the relentless Alentejo sun and still maintain interest and acidity, Esporao's chief winemaker David Baverstock knew the variety from the Barossa valley and planted it experimentally.  The result is an enticing white with layers of tropical fruit and spices on a frame of stony minerality and a long, and mouthwatering finish.
This vibrant Verdelho should appeal to fans of both Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris.  Passion fruit and nectarine round out the mid palate.

"The Best Wine of 2015 is a fresh, elegant, single-varietal with mineral notes. It has an intense aroma with tropical and citrus hints reminiscent of lime and grapefruit. Verdelho 2014 expresses all the potential of this grape variety and is yet another example of its consistency and quality, year after year, based on its perfect adaptation to Herdade do Espora~o’s terroir."

Recommended Food Pairings: Serve with appetizers, ceviche, crab cakes, grilled white fish, Indian food, pasta with pesto, salads, baked sea bass, seafood, shellfish, spicy dishes, roasted vegetables.

Monte Velho Tinto by Esporão 2013 $12.99
One of the most consumed wines in Portugal!  Made principally from a blend of the native varieties Trincadeira and Aragonez with a touch of Syrah adding depth and an international flair, this is one heck of a table wine.   The aromas of ripe cherries and raspberry, along with a terrific freshness may remind to a warm climate Pinot Noir, while loads of darker fruit and some chewy tannins on the palate bring more body and structure, similar to a Southern Rhone.  Terrific with everything from grilled Salmon to Barbeque.

Esporão Vinha da Defesa tinto 2012 $
Syrah, Touriga Nacional
30% of the blend was aged in tank, the other 70% in French oak for a period of 6 months. 6 month bottle maturation before market release.
Tasting Notes:
"Clear, intense ruby colour.  Floral aromatics from the Touriga variety, with balancing notes of leather and chocolate from Syrah.  Rich and full bodied palate, with firm structural tannins and balancing acidity."

Quinta dos Murcas "Assobio" Tinto 2012 19.99
From the single vineyard "Assobio" with an average age of 20 year old vines, the 2012 is a blend of Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, 30% of which is aged in a combination of French and American Oak.
Tasting Notes-"Perfumed and spicy with notes of blueberries.  Deep ruby with violet edges.  Round and full bodied palate with youthful fruit and integrated tannins. Finishes with good balancing acidity.  Impressive."

Esporão Reserva Red 2012 $25.99
Soil Type: Clay loam soils with granite and schist mother rock.
Average age of vines: 15 years.  Alicante Bouschet, Aragonês, Cabernet Sauvignon, Others, Trincadeira
Each variety hand picked and vinified separately, fermented in open tanks with robotic plunging and temperature control (22-25ºC), membrane pressed, malolactic fermentation in stainless steel tanks.
Matured for 12 months in 70% American oak and 30% French oak barrels. Following bottling, the wine was aged for at least 8 months before market release.
Tasting Notes: "Complex spicy aroma of dark berry fruits, with notes of toasty vanilla.  Firm and well structured with dense fruit. Fruit is still youthful, with supporting tannins that will provide ageing potential.  Dense deep red."
