Vinous, Stephen Tanzer's IWC

“Deep red, aromas of dark berry liqueur, violet and wood smoke, with a suave floral nuance in the background.  Smooth and seamless in texture, displaying good heft to its sweet blackberry and cherry flavors.  Closes sweet and long, with lingering smokiness and slow-building tannins that shape and focus the wine's succulent fruit."

Our Thoughts...............

The bouquet evokes red and dark berry liqueur, sandalwood, star anise and candied flowers, with a smoky mineral top note that builds after opening. On the palate, vibrant ripe black raspberry and cherry-cola flavors are joined by suggestions of spice cake and mocha on the back half.

Delivers a serious punch of flavor!

A Bit About The History of Stangeland Vineyards

Planted by the Miller family in 1978, the vineyard is located on a unique southern exposure in the Eola-Amity Hills AVA at a 350 foot elevation northwest of Salem. This hilltop location, rich soil, and cool climate viticultural region of Oregon combine to create an ideal growing environmentLarry Miller began planting his site near Salem, Ore.,  in 1978, starting with Wadenswil cuttings from “Papa Pinot” — the late David Lett — and the 4-acre parcel stands as one of the most venerable in the Eola-Amity Hills. He named the vineyard as a tribute to his mother using a Norwegian term for “strong land,” and this bottling has emerged as one of the most expressive and critically acclaimed of the vintage from this north Williamette Valley sub-app. The barrels announce themselves early with aromas of cocoa powder and nutmeg among hints of ripe plum, blueberry, pomegranate and blueberry, joined by a pinch of leaf and fresh leather. Its rich entry to the palate brings fresh Marionberry and sweet blueberry juice, followed by a dark edge of chocolate and black licorice. Rich blueberry skin tannins add structure while good acidity brings freshness, and there’s a fascinating herbal character in the finish..

Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris Originally planted to Pinot Noir (Wadenswil clone) and Chardonnay, additional plantings of Pinot Gris were added in 1986. These three varietals are the foundation of our estate bottled wines. In addition, several other vineyards produce grapes for our vineyard designated wine series, all to the same high standards as Stangeland Estate produced wines utilizing the best of Old World traditional wine-making methods, including aging in French oak barrels, as well as New World innovations.

Cool viticulture climate, care of the land, varietal characteristics that express the vineyard terroir lay a strong foundation for the creation of Stangeland wines. Grapes, handpicked in the cool morning hours, flow to the winery where minimal handling of the wine, gravity feed, quality assurance and attention to detail help to create wines of exceptional quality, taste and affordability.
