90 Points! Wine Enthusiast & The Wine Advocate

“The purple-colored 2006 Spiga underwent malolactic fermentation in new oak where it remained for 13 months before bottling without filtration. It reveals a reticent nose of toasty oak, minerals, and blackberry jam. This leads to a structured, dense wine with layers of fruit, plenty of spice, and 3-5 years of aging potential. Drink it from 2012 to 2021.” The Wine Advocate Importer: Jorge Ordonez

Our Thoughts...............

Aged in French and American oak for 13 months before bottling without filtration. Purple-colored with an alluring perfume of cedar, spice box, mocha, espresso, and blackberry, Mid palate offering flavors of ripe blackberries, tobacco and cocoa. Fine-grained tannins lend texture and juicy acidity keeps it all in balance. Drink now til 2018.

On Fournier and Ribera del Duero…..

If you like rich, complex, high quality red wines, you owe it to yourself to get to know the wines of Ribera del Duero. The steep vineyards rising along the banks of the Duero River in Spain’s second most important wine region, after Rioja, yield wines that are frequently outstanding.

The wines are red, the altitudes are high, and the grape is, overwhelmingly, Tempranillo. Actually it’s a local variant of Tempranillo, the early ripening variety known as Tinto Fino or Tinta del Pais in this area. It has adapted to the often harsh weather of the region and its extreme climactic fluctuations. The Ribera del Duero region, where the estate is located, is at an approximate altitude of 700 to 800 masl. This altitude produces an extreme climate change between day and night (an approximate difference of 18º to 20º C) helping to produce wines with an excellent color, structure, acidity and suitable for aging in barrels.

The climate is continental with an Atlanti influence. The rainfall is moderate, from 400 to 600 mm per year, mainly is Spring and Autumn, with sporadic precipitations is form of storms during Summer. The average insolation is approximately 2,200 hours of clear sunny days, allowing excellent grape ripeness. The rigors of the climate, with the aforementioned temperature differences and low precipitations, determine low but high quality grape yields. In general, the soils of our Rivera del Duero vineyards vary significantly but the predominant type is rocky, calcareous, sandy and clay. Most of the soils have very low organic material component, making it easier to obtain quality grapes.
