The Vineyard - Domaine la Pas de L'Escallette

Julien Zernott and his wife, Delphine Rousseau took on the challenge of creating a “domaine” in the stony, hot, arid land of Pégairolles-de-l’Escalette – a tiny commune of 144 inhabitants just north and west of Montpellier. Julien, with his degrees in viticulture and oenology (as well as a track record of producing outstanding wines in the Loire appellation of Menetou-Salon), and his wife Delphine, have built the domaine from small parcels of old-vine Grenache, Carignan, Syrah, and old plantings of Alicante, Aramon, Carignan Blanc, and Terret Bourret. The soil, such as it is, is carved into steep limestone hillsides. These soils provide “cut” to the richly ripe fruit, and help to restrain yields, resulting in wonderful concentration of flavors. The farming is organic, leaning towards bio-dynamic, and the fruit is hand-harvested and sorted.

The Wines!!

Las Clapas Blanc $37.99

Wine Advocate 90 points.
The dress is light yellow and has a clear sleek nose. Notes of lime green citrus and white flowers. Attacks the mouth with good acidity and long finish. A particularly tasty wine with crustaceans, cooked Mediterranean fish, white meat. Great as an aperitif or with dried cheeses.

Les Petit Rouge $20.99

An homage to our sons, Julius and Gabriel, who were born at the beginning of our adventure in Languedoc. Zesty, with lively red plum, raspberry and cherry flavors and touches of licorice. The flavors echo on the fresh finish.

Las Clapas Rouge $37.99

Deep purple color. Rich, concentrated aromas of red fruit, garrigue, with a touch of cassis. Intense red fruits on the palate with excellent vibrancy. Long and persistent finish. An hour later, the wine had put on weight, seemed lusher, more opulent without giving up any of its brightness.

Domaine La Rocalier Lirac $21.99

Equal amounts of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre
This Lirac rouge suits perfectly with modern cooking (Roasted chicken, Carpaccio, etc). Best to serve between 15° to 17°. For drinking within five years.

Lustau Dry Amontillado Sherry, Los Arcos $17.99

Reticent aromas of almonds and limestone give way to this wine's generous flavors of green apple and a subtle touch of orange zest. It's all shaped by spritzy, mouthwatering acidity.
The Wine Advocate 93 Points
"The non-vintage Dry Amontillado Los Arcos Solera Reserva reveals a medium amber hue along with a nutty, honeyed, dry personality with great acid. These are all remarkable efforts for their stunning value. While they are still under-the-radar for most American wine lovers, I encourage readers to give them a try as they are great introductory reference points for how profound sherry can be. I first wrote about the extraordinary sherries of Emilio Lustau many years ago, in the early days of The Wine Advocate. The portfolio of under $25 a bottle selections represents remarkable value for their complex, well-made personalities.
