Decoy Winery

History

Since the inaugural vintage of our Decoy Napa Valley Red Wine almost a quarter century ago, Decoy has taken an important place in the Duckhorn Wine Company family of wines. With a reputation for delivering great quality at a remarkable price, Decoy has established a loyal following for its distinctive style, which emphasizes ready-upon-release wines that are capable of expressing their full charm and complexity in their youth. Building on this foundation, Decoy has evolved from being a single wine that supported the Duckhorn Vineyards brand to being a supporting brand for the entire Duckhorn Wine Company portfolio. Today, in addition to the Decoy Red, the Decoy lineup includes a Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc—all of which are Sonoma County appellation-designated and highlight Decoy’s commitment to producing attractively priced wines made from exceptional vineyard sources.

Noted winemaker and Sonoma native, Dana Epperson guides the Decoy winemaking program. With extensive viticultural experience and a winemaking background spanning numerous winegrowing regions, Dana has established herself as an expert with multiple grape varieties. At the same time, because of Duckhorn Wine Company’s unique structure, Decoy also benefits from the talent and expertise of our other winemakers, each of whom has a unique area of specialization. Duckhorn Vineyards Winemaker Renee Ary contributes to the crafting of Decoy’s Bordeaux-varietal wines. Paraduxx Winemaker Don LaBorde works with Dana on the Decoy Zinfandel. Migration Winemaker Bo Felton helps guide the Decoy Chardonnay and collaborates with Dana and Goldeneye Winemaker Michael Fay on the Decoy Pinot Noir.

Fruit for the Decoy program comes from a mix of Estate vineyards and top grower vineyards. “It starts with our Sonoma County focus,” says Dana. “Whether it’s Pinot and Chardonnay from Carneros, Zinfandel from Dry Creek Valley or Bordeaux varieties from our own Ridgeline and Brownell vineyards in Alexander Valley, Sonoma County offers a range of world-class grapes.” To benefit from the diversity of Decoy’s great fruit sources, Dana and her team do as many as 150 individual fermentations each vintage with many lots as small as 5 tons. From there, hands on practices like open-top punch downs and lees stirring are applied. “There is an incredible amount of care that goes into these wines,” says Dana. “If you want to achieve small-lot quality in your wines, you have to apply the same small-lot attention to detail, including hand-sorting, the use of the finest coopers and French oak, and a commitment to artful blending. From the wealth of viticultural and winemaking talent we can draw from to our world-class cooperage program and more, Decoy benefits greatly from the remarkable resources of Duckhorn Wine Company.”

In 2012, after several years of working with its sought-after grapes, Decoy acquired the renowned Ridgeline Vineyard property to further enhance the quality of our wines. Located on Oak Mountain, Ridgeline Vineyard is situated in the Alexander Valley appellation—Sonoma County’s best region for growing Bordeaux varietals.

Ridgeline is a steep mountainside vineyard with elevations ranging from 100 to nearly 2,000 feet and benefits from an east-west exposure for maximum sunlight. These factors, and the site’s primarily Boomer and Sobrante loam soils, threaded with interlacing natural mineral springs, provide remarkable conditions for cultivating red grapes with phenomenal concentration, color and structure. Ridgeline features 89 planted acres of primarily Cabernet Sauvignon and the other Bordeaux red grapes with most of the plantings dating back to 1999. This coveted fruit is used for our Decoy Cabernet Sauvignon, Decoy Merlot and flagship Decoy Red Wine.

The Wines!!

Sauvignon Blanc$22.99

Duckhorn Vineyards has been crafting Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc since 1982. Expanding on this winemaking tradition, Decoy Sonoma County Sauvignon Blanc allows our winemaking team the opportunity to explore a different expression of this great grape from another recognized California appellation.

This vivid and enticing wine offers bright, stone fruit flavors of nectarine and apricot, as well as lovely notes of honeydew, lemongrass and grapefruit. On the palate, refreshing acidity mingles with a subtle sweetness that carries through to a fresh, lively finish.

Chardonnay $23.99

Like all of our Decoy wines, our Decoy Sonoma County Chardonnay benefits from the passion, skill and experience of our Duckhorn Wine Company team. Exploring the diversity of the Sonoma County winegrowing region allows our winemaking team greater flexibility during the blending process. Stretching from Cloverdale to Annapolis to San Pablo Bay, Sonoma County encompasses an array of microclimates, soil types, elevations, and terroirs, yielding a unique and appealing expression of Chardonnay.

Pinot Noir $25.99

Building on the traditions established by our acclaimed Goldeneye and Migration wines, Decoy Pinot Noir expands our exploration of the depth and diversity of this varietal to Sonoma County winegrowing. Highlighting a distinctly plush and approachable expression of Pinot Noir, Decoy is crafted to be ready upon release.

Made from a blend of Pinot Noir grapes from the Russian River Valley, Sonoma Coast and Carneros, this vivid and alluring wine displays a beautiful bouquet of fresh-picked strawberry, raspberry and blackberry, with hints of violet and white pepper. On the palate, the tannins are soft and silky, carrying the wine to a long, ripe berry finish.

Red Blend $25.99

The exceptional 2013 growing season yielded a spectacular Decoy Red Wine filled with alluring layers of cassis, black cherry and plum, as well as hints of baking spice, black licorice and cocoa. On the palate, this wine is weighty and deliciously complex, with refined tannins adding length and focus to a long, satisfying finish.

Cabernet Sauvignon $25.99

Winemaker Notes
From its deep ruby and violet hue to its enticing fruit-forward aromas of blackberry, currant and black cherry, this wine showcases what we love about great Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon. On the palate, the lush fruit is balanced by smooth, rich tannins and lovely layers of spice, cocoa and hints of sweet and toasty French oak.
