The Vineyards!!

ScacciaDiavole

Founded in 1884

Situated amongst the beautiful Umbrian hills, along the famous Strada del Sagrantino ( Sagrantino Road), the SCACCIADIAVOLI winery has always concerned itself with the production of wines of great character.

Scacciadiavoli is the fruit of a dream by prince Ugo Boncompagni-Ludovisi, of Rome. Founded in 1884, it was conceived as a wine “industry”: an imposing oenological complex, highly advanced for its age. It has been the property of the Pambuffetti family since 1954. The production is typical of the area: Montefalco Sagrantino, Montefalco Rosso, Umbria Grechetto, Montefalco Bianco, Spumante Brut and Spumante Rosato from Sagrantino grapes.

Oberto

The story of Andrea Oberto might seem banal or sound like the classic yarn, told yet again, but I can assure you that every time I find myself telling people how my father came to be a winemaker, the expression on their faces is one of pure amazement. Not because my father started out in a particularly adventurous or exciting way, but because his story is so simple that it fascinates and astounds people. For most of his life Andrea Oberto had two jobs: lorry driver and farmer. Indeed after a long, exhausting week of work, undoubtedly driven by his great passion for the land, Andrea would still find the energy to work on the three hectares of vineyards he inherited from his father. Part of the grapes from these vineyards would be sent to the local cooperative winery, while the rest would be turned into wine and sold to private clients by the demijohn.
Nowadays the Andrea Oberto estate continues to be a family company, but the three hectares of vineyards have become 16, and the demijohns are now bottles (around 100,000) of fine wine which is exported all over the world. Andrea’s passion, however, has not changed: while other winemakers prefer to delegate the work in the vineyards, my father has remained faithful to the countryside, continuing to work the land with the same enthusiasm he has always had.

My name is Fabio Oberto and I am Andrea Oberto’s son. I wanted to tell you how my father succeeded in fulfilling his dream, because his experience has taught me how much dedication and how many sacrifices were required to reach that sought-after “success”. I, and many of my generation – children of winemakers who, like Andrea Oberto, have dedicated their lives to this craft – have a great responsibility: that of continuing the work of these extraordinary people. People who never gave up when faced with difficulty or defeat, and who never lost faith in themselves or their passion for their work.

The Wines!!

Scacciadiavoli Grecchetto 2015: $12.99

Grecchetto is often considered the best quality white wine grape of Umbria, Italy.  This is made in a fresh style with notes of almonds, herbs, and peaches.

Scacciadiavoli Montefalco Rosso 2012: $20.99

Montefalco is a village in Umbria that is known for red wines... the Montefalco Rosso is a blend of Sagrantino, Sangiovese, Montepulciano, and Merlot.  This is a balanched but sturdy wine with notes of chocolate and dark fruits.

Scacciadiavoli Sagrantino di Montefalco 2008: $39.99

Sagrantino is the indigenous grape and a speciality of Montefalco.  The berries of the grape are very small and the wines are naturally high in tannins, giving wines that benefit from age and are often firm and dry when young --- but this winery releases the wines late, as the 2008 has just recently been imported into the US.

Oberto Barbera 2014: $21.99

Oberto makes classic wines from Piedmont, Italy.  His Barbera is very typical for the area.  Nice acidity but also nice fruit (dark fruits and plums would be good adjectives), spicyness, and some tannic structure.

Oberto Nebbiolo 2015: $27.99

A great vintage for Nebbiolo and Oberto's is a great introduction to the grape.  The wine is transparent and fragrant but also powerful and structured.  This is a wine to drink while waiting for the more prestigious wines of the zone to become available.
