“things have to change so that everything remains the same.” (Luchino Visconti)
Our trip to Austria was remarkable in several ways - not only have the winemakers worked very hard to improve their technique and provide better value, but the world of wine has begun to take much greater notice of the quality coming from this small portion of the wine-producing world.
At the same time, 2009 may prove to be the best vintage in many years due to a very unique combination of factors - 1)hail in the spring did a very severe job of pruning in most areas causing almost 30% of the blooms to be lost; 2) the summer was warm and unusually dry until August causing the roots to go very deeply into the soil to find nutrients; 3)just prior to harvest rain came and nicely fattened the grapes and laying the foundation for a very steady ripening throughout the warm, sunny harvest.
As Mozart said, "Viola, a masterpiece!"
Hillinger Secco -
The “Weingut Tegernseerhof” is a family enterprise with approximately 24 hectares of vineyards in the best crus (called “Rieden” in Austrian) of the Wachau such as Loibenberg, Kaiserberg, Kräutles, Superin, Kellerberg, Steinertal or in Krems such as Wolfsgraben, Sandgrube and Weinzierlberg.
Soil maintenance and plant protection is very carefully done. Green cover protects the earth against drainage and erosion. Permanent mowing of the weeds provides enough humus for the vines. Moderate pruning and thinning out the grapes in years of unfavourable weather conditions, guarantees healthy and ripe grapes in good quality.
Strauss Samling 88 -The Strauss wine estate, whose high-quality products are already well known and widely appreciated beyond the region‘s borders, is located in Steinbach, near Gamlitz. The enormous Gamlitzberg is the largest single wine-growing area in southern Styria.
With perfect climate conditions the Strauss vineyards are located on ideal south-facing slopes with optimum soil properties for the grape varieties of the highest quality. These wines are made in to exquisite Gamlitzberg style by the Strauss family.
Bauer Wagram Cuvee 13 -The Anton Bauer family winery is in its fourth generation. Since 1992, Anton Bauer has been responsible for managing the winery. He continues to make the traditional white wines (Gruner Veltliner and Riesling) in the Donauland region (Grüner Veltliner and Riesling), but has proven that this area can also produce excellent red wines.
Along the Danube River lie the hills of the Wagram. Its south-facing slopes with terraced vineyards, loess soil, and exceptional microclimate are responsible for producing high quality grapes. Ecological cultivation, bio-fertilization and yield reduction are necessary to guarantee the best possible harvest, and modern cellar techniques are used to ensure that this high quality ends up in the bottle.
Anton Bauer is not just following international trends. His wines are true to the terroir. These wines reflect the soil, the climate, the grape variety and the Anton Bauer touch.
The perfect combination of experience, a love of nature, modern skills in the vineyards and the cellar as well as an international far-sighted marketing form the vinification of our wines.
Patience and love to our wines were given from the senior boss Johann to his son Franz and you can see that this euphoria goes on. Our daughters are really engaged on the marketing of our products and the image of our winery.
Hillinger Blaufrankisch (this maybe a last minute surprise - then again, it may not!)
