Viña Alcanta Blanco Merseguera/Macabeo 2008
Macabeo is mostly planted in Spain's northern regions, but here in the Mediterranean coastal region it gives a wine with a slight floral character and fine breadth and medium richness - but low acidity. So it makes perfect sense to pair with Merseguera, which gives good acidity but not much flavor. You'll find clean, almost saline-quality, scents that lead to crisp and bright flavors of lime flesh, green apple, and mineral to a refreshing finish. This will be perfect with salty tapas like olives, salted almonds, mussels and even anchovies. Great value!
Viña Oropendola Verdejo 2008
The combination of old vines, soil and vinification process creates a wine that delivers amazing amount of complex aromatics offering refined notes of lemon blossom, white figs, pepper, hints of Japanese Yuzu citrus fruit, delicate lychee notes and floral character. On the palate it shows superb concentration with great layers that are refreshing and dry making it a truly rewarding experience.
In the municipality of Morales de Toro (in the province of Zamora), you can find the Lomopardo Estate, where the Sayago Winery is located in Rueda. Here they create only one wine - Viña Oropendola. It is made from a selection of quality vineyards located in the province of Segovia in northwestern Spain. Using only 100% Verdejo with vines that are trained in a goblet, this is ideal vine training for the particular climate of Reuda where it is very hot. The vines age ranges between 40 and 120 years old.
The vineyards are located in soils that are sandy with gravel on top of a layer of clay that creates the perfect condition for the Verdejo variety to grow, giving the wines great aromatic profile, complexity and unctuousness on the palate.
The grapes are all hand-harvested and go through a cold maceration on the skins for 16-20 hours and are later fermented for 20 days in stainless steel tanks under controlled temperature with a 7 month lees contact to add depth and complexity.
Alcanta Tempranillo 2007
A medium-weight Tempranillo with good clean, bright red fruit showing aromas of cherry, plum, faint notes of black pepper and a touch of earthiness. This is a great everyday red that is not over manipulated, well-restrained and balanced. The texture is satisfying with a pleasant framework of tannins. It shows no signs of heat (alcohol) on the finish; instead, it has an uplifting acidity that brightens the wine.
Mas Estela Quindals 2006 (Biodynamic)
eParker score: 89 points (#169 Feb 2007)
“The 2006 Quindals is 90% Garnacha with the balance Syrah and Carinena that spent 12 months in French oak. It sports a perfume of cedar, mineral, cinnamon, herbs, and cherry. This leads to a supple, ripe, sweetly-fruited wine with a forward personality, good balance, and 2-3 years of aging potential. Drink it over the next eight years.”
Celler Escoda-Sanahuja Coll del Sabater Cabernet Franc/Merlot 2005 (Biodynamic)
Made from a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc that has been aged for 10 months in exclusively French oak barrels. It captures slight truffle-like nuances mixed with notes of ink, iodine, violet tones, dark fruits, mineral notes, enticing shades of nutty oak character that are packaged in a well defined and elegant style. The fruit is superbly clean, delivering tremendous flavor profile with a long finish. It sees no malolactic fermentation at all.
