Well, It looks like winter weather will be with us again. You know it has always puzzled me why people who never eat bread or drink milk feel the need to stock up on those two commodities when the threat of bad weather rolls in. I would much rather make  certain I had steaks and wine to sooth my jangled nerves from not being able to get out of the house!!

Just to add to that thought, We'd like to thank so many of our clients for the very kind comments about the "experience" of shopping with us. We certainly have tried to make your time spent with us be more than a chore, but we are very pleased that you see it as a pleasant way to spend some of your very valuable time - on the weekends or any time. And for those of you who haven't taken advantage of our willingness to custom order wine - What in the world are you waiting for?? That's the fun part!!

Getting back to those jangled nerves, I'll look for you on Friday evening or Saturday afternoon
at the shop. We have some exceptional wines and beer to taste this weekend. On Friday we feature the wines of Newton Vineyard from Spring Mountain in Napa. Many of you are familiar with the Red Label Special Cuvee' Chardonnay, but wait until you taste the Claret and the Cabernet Sauvignon. On Saturday, It gets even better with Shiraz from Schild, #43 on the WS Top 100 in 2009 and Joseph Swan Pinot Noir 2006. 2007 was #34 on the WS Top 100 and a limited amount will be avaialble in the shop.

On top of that, the Beerman has obtained some of the Brewdog beers and we might just be able to convince him to open one of Britain's most sought after brews.

Some of you were able to make it to the shop for Gary Conway's visit. The owner of Carmody-McKnight had some fantastic wines that evening, but he knocked our socks off with his Olive Oil!! Hand Harvested and cold pressed to maximize freshness and nutritional value, the benefits are unbelievable, but the taste is heavenly. We don't have a lot. He has never sold it to a retailer before, only at his vineyard.

Just to round out the weekend, Kate's going to brave the weather and force her way to the NY Gift Show this weekend. If you have particular gifts and serving pieces that you want her to track down, now's the time and time's a'wastin!!

We'll see you this weekend!!

Whether on the tasting tables (where you get a 10% discount from the first bottle) or in the stacks on the aisles where you can find wines to meet any budget. We can deliver a better bottle of wine than anywhere else and still stay within your budget!!

Joseph Swan Pinot Noir "Cuvee de Trois" 2006: The wine is a little lighter in color but has wonderful, pretty aromatics of red berries, cherries, and spice with a very slight hint of mint and cinnamon. The 2007 is a Top 100 wine (also available in the shop)

Esporao Vinha da Defesa Tinto 2005: "The wine expresses itself with lots of prune, dark chocolate, mocha blended with a spicy, dark berry character that comes across with good structure from the Aragonez grape mixed with fragrant raspberry and soft fleshy fruit flavors of Castelao Frances." A Possible Cure for Alcohol Intolerance Mutation

Researchers find a molecule that may help those who can't digest alcohol
Stephanie Cain
Posted: January 20, 2010

Researchers have discovered a compound that can repair a defective alcohol metabolism enzyme, a discovery that could help an estimated 1 billion people worldwide who suffer from a particular type of alcohol intolerance—an inability to safely digest and metabolize alcohol. The findings, published Jan. 10 in the online edition of Nature Structural and Molecular Biology, suggest the possibility of treatment for those affected by the inactive enzyme. The compound may also lead to treatments to reduce the risk of heart disease.

Grape Growing Region of the Week - Barossa Valley, Australia

The Barossa Valley is a major wine-producing region and tourist destination of South Australia, located 60 km northeast of Adelaide. It is the valley formed by the North Para River, and the Barossa Valley Way is the main road through the valley, connecting the main towns on the valley floor of Nuriootpa, Tanunda, Rowland Flat and Lyndoch.

The Barossa Valley takes its name from the Barossa Ranges, which were named by Colonel William Light in 1837. Light chose the name in memory of the British victory over the French in the Battle of Barrosa, in which he fought in 1811. The name "Barossa" was registered in error, due to a clerical error in transcribing the name "Barrosa". The area is approximately 13 km long by 14 km wide.

The three major towns of the Barossa each have a distinctive personality. Tanunda is generally recognised as the most German of the three with long-standing traditions dating back to the 1840s when the first German settlers arrived in the area. Because many of them came from Prussian Silesia, they called the Barossa Neu-Schlesien, or "New Silesia".[1] The German influence survives to this day (see Barossa German). Angaston, in contrast, is considered the English town as it was settled predominantly by Cornish miners and others from Britain. The third (and largest) town, Nuriootpa, was influenced by both the German and British settlers, and today is the commercial hub of the Barossa where most of the larger stores are located.
